Kim Chun Bae Salmon House/Kim Chun Bae Yeoneo Jip in Itaewon is a great place for a small group to celebrate a special occasion.
We went to Kim Chun Bae on a Friday night and it was SUPER busy. I think we waited around 1.5 hours for a table, but it was worth it.
The restaurant is rather intimate and cozy, but still pretty loud since it is Korea.
There are only about 40 seats in the entire restaurant, so luckily there were only three of us. I'm sure they can accommodate more, but you may have to wait longer. They ended up pushing together two small 2-person circle tables for our group, so I guess this may be more of a date restaurant.
The ceiling is filled with paper lanterns, but otherwise the decor was minimal and kind of like that popular dark urban warehouse look that was popular for a while.
We decided to go with the all-in-one platter order so we could try the whole menu. Everything was pretty dang fresh, which was so nice given where we were and that we were there for a celebration.
Our favorites were the sashimi and the gravlax. I appreciated that they used fresh salmon instead of previously frozen for the sashimi, at least. The texture was great and everything was so flavorful and not at all fishy.
None of us, personally, were fans of the ganjang gejang (간장 게장), raw crab marinated in soy sauce and served on its shell, but if you wanted to try it out in Seoul and none of your other friends were too enthused at the idea (since it is usually pretty expensive), you could just go here and try it out. It tasted like how the soy sauce crabs I had at the famous shop tasted.
This was the perfect amount of food for the three of us since we had plans to grab dessert and coffee after dinner.
I did't get a picture of the full menu, but this is pretty much the gist of it.
The workers all spoke pretty good English, which is to be expected since it's off the main road in Itaewon.
Top (what we got): Kim Chun Bae Recommendations - This is all of the menu items in one order.
Fresh Salmon Sashimi
Salmon Gravlax
Soysauce Crab and Salmon Sashimi
Salmon Rice Bowl
Altang (Spicy Fish Soup)
