[DC - Shaw] Kyirisan Review - Asian Fusion Brunch - Eggs Benedict, Fried Chicken Wings, Waffles, Fried Chicken Sandwich
For one last meal in DC on this trip, I wanted to find a unique brunch. So, I was super excited when I found Kyirisan!
Also, Kyirisan is on the 2019 Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand list for DC.
Kyirisan is a relatively new modern Asian Fusion restaurant that serves a great brunch in the Shaw District.
For brunch cocktails, we got a Bloody Mary, a Mimosa, and a "Don't Worry, Climate Change is A Myth...".
I (Meredith) am always a sucker for a good clever name. My mom is a Bloody Mary fan and Marissa is a Mimosa fan.
The Climate Change is nice and light, which I really liked. I liked the cranberry, ginger, and lime flavors together and the thyme was subtle, but yet present. I definitely recommend checking it out. I (Marian) have Bloody Marys as special treats and so I chose it at Kyirisan's. It was nicely tangy without overwhelming the tomato juice. For people who like to vary their Bloody Mary's (not like me), they also have a Bloody Maria and a Bloody Mimi.
These are the Creme Fraiche Wings. The creamy sauce added a nice spicy flavor to the large portion of wings. The wing meat was tender and juicy but I'd like the skin to be a bit more crispy.
The Lump Crab Benedict was delicious, with the yoke of the egg running nicely over the crab and into the English muffin. Actually, this was the first time eating Eggs Benedict for me (Marian), but since it came with real crab, I just had to try it. The crab flavor came through very nicely and the whole dish was a very ice blend of flavors. Do be careful, though, of little pieces of cartilage in the meat. That was a small inconvenience for a delicious dish.
This is the Scallion Waffle. When I first looked at the menu I was very tempted by The OG Panki Chicken Sandwich, but Marissa really wanted that one, so I decided to go with my first instinct.
I looked around and almost every other table also had this, so I felt pretty confident with my choice. I am pretty picky about my scallion pancakes, so this one was not quite what I would hope for in a pancake since it wasn't crispy and of medium thickness. That being said, the flavors were there and I would probably get this again. I would maybe just ask them to make it extra crispy (if possible). I really liked the slaw on top. It added some texture and freshness to the dish. My only gripe is that, for my personal preference, there was a bit too much sauce. It was just kind of overpowering and salty at a certain point, but in parts of the waffle with less sauce on it, I could really taste what it added to the dish.
Finally, this is The OG Panko Chicken Sandwich. The sandwich was excellent, but large. To successfully eat it, I had to cut it in half. The chicken was delicious and juicy and wasn't overpowered by the other components of the sandwich--specifically the truffle aioli or the avocado.
The bioche bun was sturdy but sweet--definitely my favorite kind of bun. The accompanying fries were also good--crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. If you find yourself in Shaw-Howard for brunch, this is an excellent choice.
Ambiance
Kyirisan is a very bright restaurant with huge windows looking out on the city and mirrors to reflect that light. Though it was cold out when we visited, we I (Marian) felt like we were eating outdoors.

I always like having a paper copy so I can handwrite notes in it, but I know that makes me a bit strange in this day and age.
